After a Massacre, Obama and Romney Suggest Nothing

Posted: 07/20/2012 2:59 pm

Eighty-five years ago, on January 9, 1927, 78 children were killed in a movie theater in Montreal's east end, at a Sunday matinee double feature of a western called The Devil's Gulch and a comedy called Bring 'Em Young. A fire, started by faulty wiring, started a stampede. The people of Quebec, and the Catholic Church, didn't blame the faulty wiring. They blamed the movies. And no one under sixteen was allowed in a movie theater in the province for 40 years.

Early this morning, 71 people were shot -- 12 died, one of them six-years-old -- in a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, at a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises. They were killed, apparently, by a rifle and a handgun and the faulty wiring inside the head of an alleged gunman named James Holmes. And our response -- America's response -- is going to be nothing.

Quebecers needed to do something. There had to be some reason their children were gone. Luckily they had the Church, and the Church told them the problem was motion pictures.

Americans might want to do something now, but their president, Barack Obama, and their only other choice for president, Mitt Romney, have both issued statements -- after a gun massacre -- that the answer is prayer.

All of us must have the people of Aurora in our thoughts and prayers...

Obama

Our prayers and condolences go first to the families of those killed...

Romney

And what about guns, and keeping them out of lunatics' hands? Obama and Romney are silent as ashes.

No American politician will even say the words "gun control." Because getting shot isn't a law enforcement issue, or even a public safety issue. It's up to God, and the heavily armed mad men he sends, and whether you just happen to be in the wrong theater seat at the wrong time.

At least the Catholic Church in Quebec in the 20s did something. They didn't leave it all in God's hands. They weren't ridiculous.

In a movie theater in America, in 2012, a gunman isn't a problem for the state. It's between you and God. The law is only there to keep you safe from Fred Willard.

Are you suggesting that midnight movies should be discontinued? - Maybe just Batman movies? - Can you be a bit more specific on what you believe that Obama or Romney should have said? - What words could they have spoken that would get your panties out of the twist they are currently in. Let's not forget that shooting rampages have occured in resturaunts like Luby's and McDonalds. If there is one person on earth that probably wishes he could have been in that theatre, it's George Zimmerman. Can you imagine what a hero he would be if this was the person he killed instead of Trevyon Martin. But we can't ban guns because of the James Holmes of the world, we can't repeal stand-your-ground laws because of the George Zimmermans of the world. Do you get it? - We can't ban matches everytime someone sets something on fire. So if that's what you where hoping to hear from Obama or Romney, I'm glad that didn't say it because this is America and banning fireamrs is simply not an option. Not 250 years ago, not today, not ever. Okay?, let that sink in....NOT EVER!

What is that saying about ,"If you don't have anything constructive to offer, then don't say anything." So......WHAT exactly would YOU do Chris Kelly ??

Someone close to me has been a victim of a loose schizophrenic. Improve the mental health system and GET THEM OFF THE STREETS !!! It's for not just OUR protection, their's too.

There are two possibilities and they involve who is in prison. One is for that are convicted of violent crimes to be held in prison. The other is for all of us to live in a prison state. My preference would be to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. Let everyone enjoy freedom until they are shown they cannot be trusted with it.

They didn't blame the wiring. But calmer heads in government kept working on standards that improved the electrical safety. The best thing leaders can do now is think about the real issues and move to solve them.

The USA is OWNED by big money and this includes the NRA.
To politically come out in favor of ANY kind of gun control is tantamount to Su@cide.
As far as the Catholic Church goes...... they are too busy covering up pedoph@les.
Are their no moral men or women with courage AND power? (she asks in a font of sarcasm.)

The primary moves should come from the Republicans, most of whom are supported financially in part by the NRA.

The Democrats should be close on their heels.

When y ou have an outrageous lobby like the NRA - we the People are pretty much screwed. !

The problem is not weapons. It's why the American public feels the need to be personally armed with killing machines. Can target practice and killing animals be the sole reason why we have reverted to a Wild West mentality? Oakland, California has had more gun homicides this year than all of the United Kingdom. It is specious to base the pro-gun argument on the Constitution. The Second Amendment must be read in context of its historical time. To give it unlimited application would then apply to all the other Amendments and certainly this is not what the framers intended.
The sanity required to resolve the gun problem is presently beyond the willingness of the electorate, the guts of Congress and the inability of the NRA to participate in problem solving.

The more we learn, it is clear that "wires were loose" in the shooter's head. How could no one notice? This is much more about our country's inability to recognize and respond to mental illness. And yes, the mentally ill with access to guns, ammo and protective gear, is the worst of all.

After a Massacre, Obama and Romney Suggest Nothing {Chris Kelly}

Wonder how many bad laws have been enacted by rash and emotional expediency after a tragic event? Chris Kelly seems to think Obama and Romney should have immediate answers. A plan of attack while the evidence is still being sifted through. Kelly thinks offering condolences and prayers at this point in time is not good enough. He cites a situation in Montreal where actions were taken in the heat of the moment and wrong decisions were made. Why would he want our leaders to do the same thing. This may not be a federal issue but a state issue so why all the hurry, mr. Kelly?

why is it that there were no massacres of innocents similar to this in the many many years before TV ? please note that you could buy large capacity magazines for weapons such as the thompson submachine gun (100 round drum magazine) since the late 1920's but I don't remember any mass killings of innocent people until perhaps the manson family killings in the late 60s.... maybe the first was the sniper in the tower at austin texas in the 60's..

St Valentine's Day Massacre, in the 20s, the terror of the gangs with Prohibition, mob violence in the cities, etc. You can even go back to the Boston Massacre. Killing native peoples in the West. Killing is killing.
No one needs an assault weapon as a civilian. PERIOD. The fact this guy was allowed to buy 6000 rounds of ammunition, no questions asked, says that there is something seriously wrong here.
08:32 PM on 07/25/2012
those were not innocents killed in the st valentines day massacre.. no one (so far) can supply me with information about purposeful, planned attacks on innocents using bullets before Charles Whitman in the sixties and by autopsy it was found he had a brain tumor so he may have been an exception.. the others all seem to be after fame and glory or some sick sense of power for revenge... TV and Movies have definitely given many of them ideas..

the boston massacre ? that was british troops firing on protesters.. like kent state, that is not a preplanned massacre of innocents..

I think I understand your frustration, but perhaps immediately after the massacre is not the time for political debate. The family and friends directly affected are in need of condolences and support through a difficult time. Debates about gun control and mental health are undoubtedly necessary, but the grieving and shock have to take priority, not political agenda.

I like how everybody is saying he was crazy or a madmen, yet the only solution they can think of is gun control rather than funding mental healthcare and actually trying to do something about the crazy part of the equation rather than the gun part of the equation.

he is sounding more like a well adjusted A student who spent his off time volunteer counseling special needs kids.
makes it even more perplexing.......
Why does ANYONE need a 10,000 round rapid fire gun? Only to hunt PEOPLE.

Mental health care is a fundamental part of this equation. Unfortunately, America didn't get the health care reform that it desperately needed (thanks again, Max Baucus), and as such mental health care is prohibitively expensive and of low quality, even for the insured and well-to-do. The insurance companies wouldn't even cover it until a few years ago because they were told by the government that they had to. And if it becomes known that the mentally ill will have their names put on a secret list and barred from things like employment and gun ownership, then guess who's not going to see a shrink? The people who need it most.
